A major 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit off the east coast of North Island, New Zealand, on November 16, 2014, at 22:33:29 UTC, at a depth of 77 km,
reported Geoscience Australia.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a precautionary tsunami bulletin on November 16, 2014 at 2239 UTC.
344 major to great (6.0+) earthquakes hit
various places over the last 637 days. Among these were 43 7.0+ and 4 8.0+ magnitude quakes. (Sources: CSEM-EMSC, Geoscience Australia, USGS, Pacific

Major to great magnitude earthquakes (6.0+) have increased
to more than one quake every two days during the last 21 months on average.
