A great 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the west
coast of Chile on April 24, 2017, at 21:38:26 UTC, at a depth of 25 km,
reported USGS.
Chile sounded a tsunami alarm, which sent residents to areas of higher altitude. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, however,
issued a Tsunami Information Statement, although tsunami waves of 5 feet ran
ashore.
Tsunami waves are very forceful and they retract into the
ocean rapidly. Even 5-foot waves are capable of causing fatalities. Residents near coastal areas should flee to higher ground during such
a strong earthquake as a safety precaution.
775 major (6.0+) to super (8.0+) earthquakes hit various places
worldwide over the last 1,521 days. Among these were 89 7.0+
and 9 8.0+ magnitude quakes. (Sources:

Major to super magnitude earthquakes have increased to more than
one every two days on average during the last 50 months.
