Should You Homeschool Your Children?

News:  Lexington, Mass., father of 6-year-old arrested, spends night in jail over objections to homosexual curriculum in son's kindergarten class.

The above news article refers to an incident that occurred on April 27, 2005.  If that's indicative of what was happening in 2005, trust me when I tell you that the situation isn't better; I assure you it's worse.  The judge hearing this man's case told the father, David Parker, during his summation that, "You may have to consider extracting your child from the public school system."  Judge Wolf gave Mr. Parker two immediate remedies to his dilemma, "either place your son in private school or homeschool him."  The third suggestion was to elect a majority of people, which agree with him, to run the school.  In the meantime, his child would be subjected to homosexual curriculum and that is not acceptable!

This is a fact, we are not going to force this world to adopt God's laws or our Christian values.  The Word of God already tells us what is going to happen in these last days:  "In the last days, perilous times shall come.  Men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy...lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God" II Timothy 3:2-4.  "There shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts" II Peter 3:3.

Prayer was taken out of public schools in 1962.  At about the same time, sex education began in elementary schools.  Teen pregnancy soared after that and there has been a steady moral decline in our society since that time.  Now parents have to be concerned if their child might become romantically involved with their teachers!  There have been numerous reports in recent years of student/teacher relationships, children with adults 20-25 years their senior!  In this day and hour we live in, parents might ask themselves, "Who is teaching our children most of the day, five days a week, and what are my children being taught?"

(If you take a few moments away from this article to go to the Blog-News page of this website and access the Abominations category at the right-hand column, you will be able to see from the many, many articles relating to teachers arrested for sexual abuse and child pornography, that America's schools are in a very big heap of trouble and you shouldn't want your children exposed to the spiritual warfare going on against children today.)

Come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord...II Corinthians 6:17.

The Lord instructed His people, "You shall lay up My words in your heart and in your soul and bind them for a sign upon your hand that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.  You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up" Deuteronomy 11:18-19.  I am going to be quite frank, because I believe God's instructions are very clear on this matter.  Are your children receiving their primary education from a Christian, if not from you?  Are the ungodly in control of your children and their impressionable minds every day?  I think possibly many shy away from this question because they don't see any way out of the public school mess.  I would like to present some possibilities that you might not have considered for your children, if they attend public school.

Are you aware of the fact that you are not required to have teaching credentials, or even a certain level of education in order to homeschool your children in California (may vary from state to state)?  According to California law, you must be "qualified to teach."  This is a very gray area and wide open for interpretation.  Many parents have provided quality home education for their children without even possessing a high school diploma themselves.  If you are disciplined and have a strong commitment to educate your children, you can homeschool them.  Your God-given commitment to ensure that your children are trained in the admonition of the Lord and to provide them with a God-based education is what home educators are made of.  Good curriculum and teachers' materials are also key to success, if you are lacking a high school diploma.

Opponents of home education often criticize homeschoolers by alleging they don't provide their children with enough "socialization" or "social skills."  This is simply not true and I know this first hand.  I had a strong burden to home educate my son, Levi, because I had no way of reconciling my Christian faith with turning him over to a Godless system for his educational needs.  I heard that there was a community of home educators in Orange County, California, where I lived at the time, from Dr. James Dobson's radio program, "Focus on the Family."  It was difficult financially because I had to give up my career, which provided us a bit more pay than my ex-husband earned at that time.  Nevertheless, it was a "no-brainer;" I knew what God wanted me to do for our son.  I networked with Christian home educators in my area and we had group school days, group field trips, group park days, group graduation ceremonies, and the best thing about it was we all loved the Lord and we were all committed to our children's Christian-based educations.  There were times when I was unable to connect with other families, but my son played with other neighborhood children after school.  Levi was just as "socialized" as any other child with our church involvement, homeschool network, and neighborhood friends.  In fact, I could retort that children in public schools seem to have too much unsupervised socialization, which ends up detrimental in many cases.  You hear of drugs or weapons being brought to school, and bullying and peer pressure, which leads to disastrous situations for some children.

I have to admit that I had one reservation about home education and that was regarding possible retribution or interference by the School District.  I learned about the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) through "Focus on the Family," and I paid a yearly fee of $95.00 for legal protection, in the event I faced opposition.  It was a great comfort to know that the legal defense was there for us, but we never had to use it.  I didn't hear of anyone else in our network of homeschoolers that ever had a problem with the School District either.  There are Christian Homeschool networks in many major cities and counties throughout the US.  The Home School Legal Defense Association is an excellent resource for locating homeschool groups and purchasing curriculum.  HSLDA provides comprehensive information and instructions on their website for new or potential home educators: www.hslda.org

I can only encourage you to seek the Lord and pray diligently about possible solutions if your children are currently attending public school, or possibly even private schools that do not provide Christian-based instruction, and I have summarized some reasons why:  God instructed His people to teach their children (Deuteronomy 11:18-19, Proverbs 22:6).  You can supervise your children's influences and make certain that evil communications are not affecting them.  You can ensure that they not only receive a proper education, but that they are also instructed daily in prayer and the Word of God; your child's eternal soul depends on this.

Finally, I am personally aware of the sacrifices involved in homeschooling, or providing a private Christian school education for your children.  I know people, including myself, who have downsized, given up careers, relocated, scrimped, saved, and sacrificed in ways you may not have thought possible; but I can assure you that the children involved are rooted and grounded in their Christian faith and they will not depart from it.  How do I know this?  Because it is a promise in God's Word (Proverbs 22:6) and He never breaks a promise.  I have also had the privilege of knowing many of these children and their parents.  My son went on to be with the Lord at age 24.  I have no doubt that he is with the Lord right now, waiting for me, having escaped eternal hell, because I followed the will of God and I gave of my time and effort to instruct him in the Word of God and the way of salvation.  Can anyone put a price on that?

* If the road to home education seems impossible now, maybe due to your financial inability to stay home and provide home education for your children at this time, I would still like to encourage you to pray and ask God to make a way when there seems to be no way.  God is still the same prayer-answering, miracle-working God that He was for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the Apostles!  "Ask and you shall receive" Matthew 7:8.

Some suggestions for single parents who work full time:

Do you have a Christian relative, possibly parents, who are willing to provide the home education?

If you find enough working parents at your church who would also like to homeschool their children, consider the possibility that parents could rotate teaching all of the children on their respective days off.

Have you fully considered what can be sacrificed for the sake of providing your children with a Godly, home-based education, such as giving up the second car? Forgoing expensive vacations for more conservative close-to-home recreation? Selling your home and buying a less expensive home?

You may be able to come up with some more ideas, with God's help.

"God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised, God has chosen, yes, and the things which are not, to bring to naught things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence" 1 Corinthians 1:27-29.

If you would like to home educate your child(ren), but need accreditation, you may want to consider Enlightium Christian Academy, which provides an online accredited Christian-based education.

God bless you!
